Humanist Manufacturing Academy
The Humanist Manufacturing Academy offers practical online self-paced courses that share knowledge and experience in a human-centered approach to manufacturing. These courses are not just theoretical, but designed to provide practical solutions and strategies that can lead organizations to environmental, financial, and social success. Leaders and managers adopting the Humanist Manufacturing framework will gain a comprehensive understanding and a robust set of skills, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and tools to significantly benefit all internal and external stakeholders. The academy offers courses on the Humanist Manufacturing framework outlined in Humanist Manufacturing: A Humanitarian Approach to Excellence in High-Impact Plant Operations.

There are four options for doing the coursework. Individuals can 1) do the work independently, 2) as a cohort with other students, 3) in a one-on-one setting where I provide additional feedback to the student, and 4) use a customized option of in-person, virtual, or hybrid options to fit the specific needs of your organization. You can sign up for option one of working independently at any time using the information below.

Please get in touch with me directly if you are interested in the other three options by phone at 734-664-9076 or by email at JoeSprangel.ESS@gmail.com. I can also support the implementation of any portion or the entire framework that can be done in person, virtually, or as a hybrid of the first two options.

Employees make a living wage and can maximize their full potential in a work environment that motivates them. Their well-being is essential to their employer, providing a safe work environment free of potential physical or mental harm. Suppliers are treated as valued partners. The organization is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and welcomes all genders, races, and ethnicities. They create opportunities for persons with perceived disabilities, individuals on the autism spectrum, returning citizens, veterans, women, and those needing support in breaking out of the poverty cycle. These are examples of integral initiatives to the human-centered approach to humanist manufacturing.

Developing Internal Operations
Listing agent
The course guides establishing internal operations that fully support the workforce's needs. It focuses on building overall operations aligned with humanist commitments from an internal organizational perspective. It begins with selecting the business operating system (BOS) the company will use to develop "a company guidebook that outlines what, how, when, and why regarding company responsibilities." It works through recommendations to consider when creating a BOS that aligns well with the humanist manufacturing framework. There is content on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the benefits of adopting lean manufacturing, and the wisdom of W. Edwards Deming’s 14 Points for Management. Additionally, there are a wide range of approaches that a manufacturing operation integrating humanist commitments can adopt, various ways to conduct product design, considerations to adopt environmentally favorable materials, looking at trends impacting manufacturing processes, and closes out with a focus on initiatives companies can integrate to become more sustainable operations.

The course guides leadership through a plan to meet employee expectations and ensure that their values align with the values of their employers. Additional content is provided on the value of creating optimal tension for each employee, a point on the curve that is the sweet spot between the extremes of no pressure to perform and too much pressure. There are also suggested approaches to improve employee engagement, boost employee morale, rewire the human brain, recognition, reward, and other considerations around pay and benefits to support the needs of employees.

Positive External Impact
Listing agent
Humanist manufacturing operations can potentially be a vital contributor to work to develop thriving communities. One approach is to use best practices to hire previously underutilized employee pools. The reasons for overlooking them often include a lack of understanding of employment personnel's unique but reasonable needs for work accommodations. Additional content exists on understanding and implementing workforce integration models that lead to employers hiring high-caliber employees from various backgrounds that limit their employment options. There is further information to guide manufacturers in revitalizing communities that are experiencing deindustrialization. The High-Roads Industrial Commons model is one approach to bringing back these negatively impacted communities that previous manufacturers have abandoned.
